Central Neck Compartment Dissection
The central neck compartment describes the collection of lymph nodes in the paratracheal, pretracheal, delphian and mediastinal regions. It can be accessed through the same incision that is used to perform a thyroidectomy. Central neck dissection is routinely performed by Dr. Alen Cohen and Dr. Jerome Vener in Los Angeles in cases of papillary thyroid cancer during the initial total thyroidectomy not only for diagnostic but also for therapeutic purposes. Many new studies corroborate the importance of this procedure during the initial treatment of patients with papillary thyroid cancer. It is believed to decrease the rate of central neck recurrences as well as postoperative thyroglobulin levels.
