Alen N. Cohen, M.D., F.A.C.S.

cohen2Dr. Cohen is Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and is one of a select number of surgeons in the country that specializes in minimally invasive thyroid and parathyroid surgery.  As such he was recently named Director of the Minimally Invasive Thyroid & Parathyroid Surgery program at West Hills Medical Center. The first and only program in the San Fernando Valley. He understands the importance of combining function and cosmesis in the surgical management of patients with various head and neck disorders, including tumors of the head and neck region.

He is also a renowned expert in the medical and surgical treatment of sinus and allergy, and has pioneered a breakthrough procedure termed, Minimally Invasive image-Guided Sinus Surgery (MIGSS)™.  Due to his passion for the treatment of patients with various nasal and sinus disorders, he recently established the Southern California Sinus Institute (SCSI). He also treats a multitude of patients with snoring and sleep apnea and performs various procedures, including in-office procedures, to treat these patients.  Dr. Cohen also has extensive facial plastic & reconstructive training and performs a number of in-office and operative cosmetic procedures to allow his patients to look and feel their best.

Dr. Cohen obtained his B. S. in Neuroscience after graduating summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from UCLA and was awarded acceptance to the prestigious David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, a top 10 school.  He gained his M. D. degree after four years with honors and a thesis in Head and Neck Surgery and subsequently was recruited to pursue a Head and Neck Surgical Residency at UCLA Medical Center, a top 5 program in the country. While at UCLA Medical Center he completed 2 years of general surgical training and 4 years of specialized head and neck surgical and facial plastics training.  During his training at UCLA, he rotated to Harbor General County Hospital, Olive View Medical Center, Wadsworth Veteran’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA). His extensive training at CHLA has made him rather adept in the management of pediatric patients with ear, nose and throat disorders. He completed his residency with a one-year Chief Residency in Head and Neck Surgery at UCLA Medical Center where he emphasized in minimally invasive techniques for the surgical management of thyroid and parathyroid diseases and head and neck tumors.

He is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He also maintains a full membership in the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Rhinologic Society.

Dr. Cohen has extensively published in the field and is one of a select number of surgeons in the country who is at the forefront of his field. He continues to maintain a professorship at UCLA where he is actively engaged in teaching surgical residents and medical students.
